The first Saturday in May is basically my Super Bowl. I have been throwing Kentucky Derby parties for years, and I can tell you with complete confidence — there is no better excuse to decorate your home to the nines, wear a fancy hat, serve stunning food, and gather all your favorite people together for an absolutely magical afternoon. The Kentucky Derby is glamour, tradition, excitement, and Southern hospitality all rolled into two glorious minutes of racing. The party around it? That can last all day.
Whether you’re planning your first Derby party or your tenth, I’m sharing my complete guide to hosting a Kentucky Derby party that feels festive, intentional, and genuinely fun — from decorations and invitations to food, drinks, games, and everything in between.
Set the Date and Send Those Invitations!
Table of Contents
The Kentucky Derby is always the first Saturday in May — in 2025 it falls on May 3rd. Mark your calendar, set your party date, and get those invitations out at least 3–4 weeks in advance.
Invitation ideas:
– Digital invites on Canva or Evite in a Derby theme (roses, horse silhouettes, mint julep cups)
– Printed invitations in cream and gold with a “Post Time” listed for when guests should arrive
– A fun note encouraging guests to dress up (hats required!)
A simple but impactful detail: let guests know the dress code upfront. Encourage Kentucky Derby attire — hats, fascinators, sundresses, seersucker suits. This elevates the entire atmosphere and makes for incredible photos.

Kentucky Derby Party Decorations
The Derby aesthetic is rooted in the Kentucky rose (the race is called the “Run for the Roses”), racing heritage, and old-school Southern elegance. Here’s how to bring that to life at home:
Color Palette
Stick to the classic Derby palette:
– Red roses — the signature Derby color
– Emerald green — for the racetrack and Southern lushness
– Gold and cream — elegant, timeless, Derby royalty
– Black accents — for sophistication and jockey colors
Table Centerpieces
- Oversized bouquets of red roses in mint julep cups or silver trophy-style vases
- Small terracotta pots filled with fresh herbs (mint!) tied with ribbon
- Scattered horseshoe props and vintage racing photos
- Jockey silks fabric draped along the table
- 🏆 Silver Trophy Vase — Derby Party Centerpiece
- 🐴 Horseshoe Table Scatter Decorations — Derby Props
Banners and Signage
- “Run for the Roses” banner above the food table
- “Post Time: 4PM” sign at the entrance
- Personalized “Bet on [Your Name]’s Derby Party” banner
Chalkboard with race schedule and horse names🎉
- 📋 Large Tabletop Chalkboard — Party Signage

Tablecloths and Linens
Green tablecloth as your base (for the racetrack feel), layered with a cream or gold table runner. Use cloth napkins in red or cream tied with a black satin ribbon.
Kentucky Derby Party Food
No Kentucky Derby party is complete without a spread of classic Southern bites. The key is to make it feel abundant and beautiful while keeping prep manageable.
My go-to Derby party menu:
– Benedictine finger sandwiches
– Hot Brown bites
– Beer cheese with pretzel bites and vegetable crudités
– Deviled eggs
– Country ham and beaten biscuits
– Bourbon balls and Derby chocolate bark for dessert
– Strawberry shortcake cups
For a smaller gathering, just hit the highlights: finger sandwiches, deviled eggs, and bourbon balls. That’s a Derby party.

Kentucky Derby Party Drinks
The mint julep is the star of the show, but offer a full drink menu so everyone has something to love.
Derby Party Drink Menu:
– Classic Mint Juleps (in silver julep cups, naturally)
– Sparkling Oaks Lily cocktails
– Bourbon lemonade
– Sweet tea (spiked or not)
– Sparkling rosé or Champagne for toasting
– Lemonade or sparkling water with fresh mint for non-drinkers
Set up a self-serve mint julep bar — pre-made mint simple syrup, good bourbon, crushed ice, fresh mint, and julep cups — so guests can mix their own. It’s interactive and completely takes the bartending pressure off of you!

Kentucky Derby Party Games and Activities
One of my favorite things about a Derby party is the built-in entertainment — the race itself is a two-minute thrill! But before and after post time, you’ll want some activities to keep the energy going.
Horse Race Betting Game
This is my absolute favorite Derby party activity. Print out a list of all the horses in the race with their odds. Have guests pick their top 3 horses and “place bets” using play money or poker chips. The person with the most accurate picks wins a prize — maybe a bottle of bourbon or a Kentucky Derby gift basket!
Best Hat Contest
Announce a “Best Hat” contest at your party (tell guests in advance!) and have everyone vote on their favorite hat at the end. Give out a small prize — a ribbon, a framed photo, a tiara. Trust me, this gets people serious about their hat game and leads to the most incredible photos.
Derby Day Bingo
Create or print Derby Day bingo cards with Derby-themed squares (horse falls, jockey flips, photo finish, etc.). Hand them out when guests arrive and play through the broadcast.
Photo Booth Corner
Set up a little photo corner with Derby props — oversized hats, rose bouquets, horse cutouts, a “Winner’s Circle” sign. Your guests will use it constantly and you’ll end up with the most amazing group photos.

Derby Party Timeline: Day-of Schedule
Here’s how I structure my Derby party day:
- 12:00 PM — Guests start arriving (the Oaks race, Derby’s “little sister,” runs at around 12:30!)
- 1:00 PM — Food spread opens, mint julep bar is in full swing
- 2:00 PM — Hat contest judging and winner announced
- 3:00 PM — Derby betting game opens, guests choose their horses
- 4:30 PM — TV coverage begins, everyone gathers
- 5:00 PM — Post time! The race goes off around 6:57 PM EST
- 7:00 PM — Winner’s Circle celebration, toast with juleps
- Evening — Dessert, more drinks, and the post-race glow
